Chocolate Gravy (aka Soppin’ Chocolate)

January 13, 2026

Chocolate Gravy, often lovingly called “Soppin’ Chocolate,” is a cherished Southern comfort dish with deep roots in Appalachian and Southern home cooking. Traditionally served for breakfast rather than dessert, this humble yet indulgent gravy emerged during times when simple pantry staples were transformed into comforting meals. Passed down through generations, it remains a nostalgic favorite, especially in regions where biscuits and gravy are a morning tradition.

Made with cocoa powder, flour, sugar, milk, and butter, chocolate gravy cooks into a smooth, glossy sauce with a rich chocolate flavor and a pudding-like consistency. Warm and velvety, it is ladled generously over freshly baked buttermilk biscuits, allowing the gravy to soak in—hence the name “soppin’ chocolate.” The flavor is not overly sweet, striking a perfect balance between breakfast comfort and chocolate indulgence.

Chocolate Gravy is more than a recipe; it’s a memory-laden dish often associated with family kitchens, weekend mornings, and shared tables. Best enjoyed fresh and warm, it offers a unique taste of Southern culinary heritage. Whether revisiting childhood memories or discovering it for the first time, Chocolate Gravy delivers simple, soulful comfort in every spoonful.
