Brazilian Cheese Bread – Pao de Queijo

January 8, 2026

Brazilian Cheese Bread, or Pão de Queijo, is a beloved snack and breakfast staple that originates from the Minas Gerais region of Brazil. These small, airy rolls are naturally gluten-free, made with tapioca flour, eggs, cheese, and milk, giving them a distinctive chewy texture and cheesy flavor. Traditionally enjoyed fresh from the oven, Pão de Queijo has become a symbol of Brazilian comfort food, celebrated for its simplicity, versatility, and irresistible aroma.

In this recipe, tapioca flour is combined with milk, butter, and eggs to create a smooth, elastic dough that is then enriched with grated cheese, typically a tangy, salty variety like Minas or Parmesan. The dough is shaped into small balls and baked until puffed, golden, and slightly crisp on the outside while remaining soft and chewy inside. Each bite delivers a delicate balance of creamy, cheesy flavor and a pleasantly chewy texture that makes these rolls both comforting and addictive.

Perfect as a breakfast treat, snack, or accompaniment to coffee, Brazilian Cheese Bread is quick to prepare yet impressively flavorful. Its naturally gluten-free base makes it accessible to a wide range of diets, while its cheesy richness ensures it’s loved by both children and adults alike. Pão de Queijo demonstrates how humble ingredients and traditional techniques can create a timeless, crowd-pleasing delight.
